The Renaissance is a particular art historical period which spread throughout Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. It can be traced back to the competition for the bronze doors of the Baptistery of Florence in 1401. This historical moment is characterised by an anthropocentric view of the world, a revival of antiquity and the man who broke away from the theocentric medieval vision (that God is the centre of the Universe) and drew attention to the earthly reality, replacing a secular mindset which defined the capacity of humans, an anthropomorphic mindset typical of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.
First with Humanism in literature through the recovery of ancient texts, the original versions of which were discovered.
In ‘Oration on the Dignity of Man’ in the humanist court of Lorenzo, Pico della Mirandola says ‘I have placed you at the centre of the world, I have created you so that you are the creator of thyself’. God says that he set Adam free defining the laws of the cosmos. God says that humans can choose good or evil.
In medieval art the reflection on a theocentric life was symbolic and abstract, figures and icons to be idolised from a distance and then slowly over time Giotto and Arnolfo di Cambio created a new language.
Through perspective, the three-dimensional Renaissance vision represented the human figure with realistic proportions, beginning a psychological analysis of the characters who experienced human emotions, psychological insight.
Three-dimensional representation of space, attention to the different proportions of the human body, a psychological analysis, all mediated through the recovery of something ancient.
It was the recovery of antiquity, since the Greeks and Romans had already studied the perfect proportions of the human body, and so people began to study live bodies again.
The scientific, intellectual artist was not the craftsman of the Middle Ages and gave a botanical attention to the representation of Nature and so it was necessary to study in an antique manner.
200 floral essences of Botticelli’s Primavera,Leonardo da Vinci the zoologist and anatomist, along with Michelangelo, was dissecting corpses.
Begun in Florence, the Renaissance came about because of the clash between Ghiberti and Brunelleschi in 1401 and it created a situation of peace since order was guaranteed by a group of alternating merchant and banking families in power.
1) Wealth so that art could be invested in
The importance of culture, a civic pride, earthly life is exalted and there is a vast legitimacy of money
The wealth translated to the human ability which triumphs over the blows of fate
2) EMERGENCE OF THE MERCANTILE OLIGARCH
Florence, unlike most other dominions, was no under the control of a single authority and was founded by mercantile oligarchs. The authority was constituted by the Priors who came from the arts and guilds, it encouraged the patronage of the arts, that is to say that art was used as an instrument of power and propaganda es strozzi (santa Trinita) and financed by families who used it as an expression of their own power.
Arts and guilds patronised buildings such as CALIMALA the baptistary and San Miniato a Monte, wool, THE CATHEDRAL, silk – OSPEDALE INNOCENTI and ORSANMICHELE, they wanted to make something better than all the others.
They wanted to make something better than antiquity and their contemporaries such as Giovanni Acuto and then Andrea del Castagno.
4) THE THEME OF THE CRUCIFIXION: ARTISTS CONFRONTED THE SAME THEME
5) High cultural level and good literacy, a city of merchants and bankers, the Abaco schools to make counts / in order to contend, a more open mentality in which even children could read and write.
